Our Players

The original members of Rhapsody String Quartet first met back in 2000 whilst studying on the BA Applied Music course at the University of Strathclyde.  The quartet officially formed in 2005 and has enjoyed playing at weddings ever since!

Nicola Connell

Violin 2

Nicola began playing the violin at a young age, receiving lessons in school. In these years she played with many orchestras and travelled to various countries. Such was her enthusiasm for music that she continued her studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, graduating with a BMus Honours in 2006. Nicola now works as an Instrumental Instructor, teaching the violin in schools throughout South Ayrshire. Alongside her teaching Nicola regularly performs as a freelance violinist with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera.

Iain Massey

Hailing from Ayrshire, Iain began his musical career playing violin aged 11. After a few short years and with the encouragement of his teacher, he made the sensible move to viola and played in all of Ayrshire, Strathclyde and Scotland’s National youth orchestras and string orchestras at some point in his early career, including a stint as double bass and bass guitar player in the Ayrshire Youth Jazz Orchestra under Stewart Forbes, where he developed a passion for jazz and jazz fusion music. He went on to full time study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he was taught by Jimmy Durrant and Michael Beeston of the Edinburgh Quartet. While attending the RSAMD, he worked under numerous internationally acclaimed conductors including Bryden Thompson, Sir Alexander Gibson, Norman Del Mar and Emanuel Hurwitz.

Nicola West

Nicola has been involved in musical activities from an early age. Starting off with piano and cello lessons and a great deal of singing with the local theatre group, she progressed through the Associated Board grades and decided in secondary school to pursue a career in music. Now, having attained an Honours Degree in Applied Music specialising in film composition from Strathclyde University, Nicola is an accomplished performer, composer and recording artist. In addition to playing cello with the Rhapsody String Quartet, she spends her time singing in bands, tutoring and writing her own music.
